St Nicholas Church, Lake Mavrovo

The sunken church in Lake Mavrovo is no longer underwater. For years we drove past St Nicholas Church and I kind of like seeing it just poking above the waterline.

Built from1850 and opened in 1857, St Nicholas Church was submerged in 1953, when Lake Mavrovo was created for the local hydroelectric scheme.

The lake, which is still a popular tourist spot, has been allowed to partially drain and the church can now be visited again. There is still no roof, but the front spire was under reconstruction in the summer of 2021. Since then, we've been told the bell has been added.
